Chen & Chang’s Partner Helena Chen Spoke at the Asia Civil Law Summit in Seoul
Chen & Chang’s partner, Helena Chen, was invited to speak at the session “Contract Interpretation in Civil-Law Governed Arbitration” at the Asia Civil Law Summit, organized by KCAB International in Seoul on 27 October 2026.
Helena joined international arbitration professionals from Germany, Australia, Chile, Korea, and other jurisdictions to discuss the fundamental differences between civil law and common law approaches to contract interpretation. The discussion focused on the civil law emphasis on the parties’ common true intentions and the common law focus on the express terms of the contract. The speakers also explored how parties, counsel, and arbitrators navigate these differences in practice and their potential implications for arbitral proceedings and outcomes.
